Taiji (taichi, also called taijiquan) is one of the most distinctive traditional Chinese sports. It is traditional Chinese boxing featuring physical and mental training and mixes slow and flexible movements with quick and hard attacks. It is formed with the concepts of yin and yang from the traditional Chinese philosophies combined with theories from the Book of Changes, traditional Chinese medicine, ancient “daoyin practice”and appropriate breathing techniques. Taiji has an immense audience and is passed on from generation to generation.

The stamps use fine brushwork figure painting, and take black, white and gray as the main colors. The background of the stamps simulates Chinese ink and wash painting to reflect some ideas of taiji: placidity, inclusiveness and simplicity. The first stamp depicts an old man with white hair and a long beard, who is calmly performing the single whip movement, reflecting the traditional style of taiji and its role in prolonging people’s lives. The second stamp depicts a woman doing a sword dance, with shadow-like air currents in the background. On the third stamp, a man and a woman are performing tuishou (hand pushing with a partner). They are in black and white, symbolizing the coupling of yin and yang, a combination of reality and fantasy in taiji.
